Always forward

Dear friends,

In the more than 100 years Children's Hospital Colorado Colorado has been in operation, countless children and their families have experienced life-changing moments within our walls. Our hospital has never been simply a building or location, but a place where caring, skilled hands intervene to heal and comfort children and the families who love them.

One may observe our changing surroundings and wonder if we too have changed. Let us share with you this excerpt from Children's 1961 annual report - fitting words, even today:

"Contrast after contrast could be drawn between the past and the present. Only one thing remains unchanged - the interest, continuing devotion, and support of the staff, personnel, volunteers, and friends of Children's Hospital whose support and contributions have made and continue to make the hospital a reality for the care of sick children."

Still today, you can see this determined spirit engraved in the hearts of thousands of nurses, volunteers, doctors, social workers and all those who believe in our mission. Medicine and science have evolved so we can heal more children in better ways. Many of our own our nurses, doctors and researchers helped shape how the world cares for children. As a research and teaching hospital, we find strength in collaborations on the Anschutz Medical Campus, across our community and with medical clinicians and researchers nationally.

In our 2010 annual report, we remember our past as we look forward. We encourage you to get to know the inspiring patients featured here. Read about colleagues who together discovered a new type of lung disease; see the unbelievable progress in survival rates for leukemia patients; learn  of the new hope for expectant moms carrying high-risk babies  in an innovative partnership with the University of Colorado Hospital and the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Beyond our patients, see how Children's personally impacted Moses Taylor, a founder of Children's Hospital Colorado Foundation, years before he began fundraising for Children's; see how nursing has evolved over the past 30 years and how it is different for new nurse Tony Yost. See how Children's has always been, and always will be, the best hospital for children in the Rocky Mountain region.

You may have also noticed a subtle, yet significant change to our name. We proudly add our geographic location of Colorado to our hospital name. On a national level, we distinguish ourselves clearly by highlighting the region we serve. We do that with a great satisfaction and pride for our community, our western spirit and the brilliant hospital professionals who live and work here.

Through 2010, and now into 2011, we look to the past for wisdom as we move forward in providing the best pediatric healthcare for children and their families.

Sincerely,

James E. Shmerling, DHA, FACHE, President and Chief Executive Officer

Cathey M. Finlon, Chair, Board of Directors
