Early Nitric Oxide Use May Prevent Breathing Problems, Help Protect Preemies’ Brains

DENVER (July 24, 2006) – Inhaled nitric oxide can significantly lower the risk of lung and brain damage in some very low birth weight premature infants, but children must be studied for several years to assess the long-term, protective benefits of the treatment on brain development, said a Colorado researcher who led one of two studies and whose findings will appear in the July 27 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.
