Children's Hospital Colorado and University of Colorado Hospital Announce the Expansion of Our Mother-Baby Program

Children's Hospital Colorado’s longstanding commitment is to deliver the highest quality, most advanced care to improve the lives of children. It is in this spirit that Children's Hospital Colorado and University of Colorado Hospital are exploring a partnership to advance existing mother-baby services to provide unparalleled care and treatment for high-risk moms and their newborns in a dedicated mother/baby facility that will eventually serve as a local, regional and national referral center.

Until this new facility is built, these services will continue to be provided by our high risk mother/baby teams through the Colorado High Risk Maternity and Newborn Program.

In November Children's Hospital Colorado and University of Colorado Hospital signed a Letter of Intent to develop a preeminent maternal-fetal/neonatal medicine program to be housed at Children’s, thereby realizing one of the prime benefits of relocating to our combined medical campus in September, 2007.

“We’re bringing together the extensive clinical and technical expertise inventories of two great healthcare organizations to serve the needs of mothers and their babies across the country,” said Jim Shmerling, Children’s president and chief executive officer.

Babies and mothers cared for by our team of maternal, fetal and newborn specialists have access to more pediatric and adult specialists than any other hospital in the Rocky Mountain region. The signed Letter of Intent sets the stage for developing a single, coordinated mother-baby facility that will provide the best care and best outcomes for mothers and babies under one roof.

Our two organizations, which have each secured national prominence in patient care, research, education and innovation, have provided services to mothers, babies, high-risk pregnancies and complex newborns for more than three decades. By building on these already existing services, Children's Hospital Colorado and University of Colorado Hospital will enhance our combined ability to provide unparalleled care by continuing to work with our partner community hospitals and obstetric care providers for traditional obstetric services, moving high-risk moms and babies close to home when appropriate.

In addition, this partnership will allow both institutions to advance clinical care, education and research. We will have the potential to improve survival rates for the high-risk fetus; facilitate diagnosis of in-utero conditions; and intervene in ways that can reduce and eliminate consequences for mom and baby – even related to future childhood and adult chronic diseases.

It is an honor to care for your children, and we look forward to this latest example of our partnership with University of Colorado Hospital to extend world-class care to moms and newborns throughout the country.
