Katie’s Story: From Brain Cancer and a 1% Chance of Survival, to College Graduation
Nearly 20 years ago, Katie Beets was given less than a 1% chance of survival after being diagnosed with astrocytoma. Dr. Michael Handler, a then new neurosurgeon at Children’s Hospital Colorado, offered to remove the 8-year-old’s brain tumor, with the caveat that she may never walk or talk.
Katie recently visited Children’s Hospital Colorado, where she delightfully reconnected with her hero, Dr.Handler, and other favorite doctors and nurses. A few days later, Katie graduated from college with honors, walked across the stage to receive her diploma and delivered the keynote address.
