Why Choose Children's Hospital Colorado for Lab Tests
You might have heard your friends or other parents talk about why they prefer to take their kids to Children's Hospital Colorado to have their blood drawn. These families know that while a blood draw is a simple procedure, it is still a cause for pain and fear in their kids and the procedure can also often be traumatic for the parents. They understand that the experience at Children’s is better than going to another laboratory.
Our lab staff often sees patients that have been sent to us after unsuccessful blood drawing attempts at other laboratories. These patients are often now afraid of needles and can be sore from bruising. They come to Children's Hospital Colorado to have their blood drawn the right way. At Children’s, we are skilled at performing even the most difficult blood draws.
Children's Hospital Colorado Lab Staff
The Children’s Lab Staff has extensive training in pediatric phlebotomy (clinicians who draw blood from patients). The laboratory also has special expertise in the testing of lab samples from kids. At Children's Hospital Colorado, finger sticks and heel sticks are commonly used to collect blood samples for your child. We perform a venipuncture only if it is necessary. When a venipuncture is required we use a butterfly needle, the smallest and most comfortable needle available.
The majority of the patient population at other laboratories is adults. While these laboratories may see an occasional pediatric patient, we do not believe this provides the staff enough experience to ensure the special skills needed to draw blood from kids. At Children's Hospital Colorado, pediatric patients are all we focus on. This means your child gets only the best and most compassionate staff to perform their lab draws.
Children's Hospital Colorado Laboratory
Children's Hospital Colorado has designed its lab services specifically around children. That means everything, from the waiting room to the equipment used to result tests, is centered on kids. The most important reason to select Children's Hospital Colorado Laboratory for your child’s laboratory tests:
The Equipment: At Children’s, we strive to make the blood draw for your child as comfortable as possible. In most cases a finger stick or heel stick will provide a blood sample large enough to result a test. In case this is not sufficient, as some tests require larger amounts of blood, we always use butterfly needles which are smallest needles available. Although they are more costly than the straight needles used for adults, the butterfly needle is what is needed to draw kids.
- Test Analyzers: Children’s laboratory is designed around what is best for your child. As we know a blood draw can be a traumatic experience for your child, being able to take a smaller sample is very important to us. Our test analyzer equipment is chosen based on the ability to test smaller samples of blood. By selecting equipment based on this, we are able to reduce multiple sticks or venipuncture.
- Heel/Hand Warmers: Heel/hand warmers are used to warm the site where the blood will be drawn from. They increase circulation and blood flow, which makes for a quicker and easier patient procedure. Using a heel or hand warmer with your child does take a little more time; however, we believe this is a necessary step for our patients The extra minutes we wait for `warming’ allows us more time to interact with the patient and parent and to explain what we are going to do.
