The Hematology Program at Children's Hospital Colorado

With the region's most comprehensive pediatric diagnosis, treatment and support programs, the Hematology Program at Children’s Hospital Colorado is internationally recognized for expertise in hemophilia, bleeding and clotting disorders, hematological diseases and immuno-hematological diseases. Our Program also houses the pediatric components of the University of Colorado Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center and the Colorado Sickle Cell Treatment and Research Center.

What is hematology?

Hematology is the treatment and study of blood. This includes the bone marrow in which cells are produced, the circulating cells (including red blood cells) that carry and deliver oxygen, the platelets that participate in clotting and injury repair, and white blood cells that fight infection.

Hematology is also the study of the coagulation, which is the clotting of blood so that a person does not excessively bleed when cut or injured.

At Children’s Colorado, the science behind hematology helps our doctors care for patients with blood disorders that can affect oxygen levels, clotting and the ability to fight infection.

Why choose Children’s Colorado for hematology and blood disorders?

Children’s Colorado has nationally and internationally renowned experts in all phases of hematology including red blood cells, platelets, white blood cells and the clotting of plasma. Our hematology expertise is unmatched in the Colorado and throughout the Rocky Mountain region.

Our doctors are also leading researchers in their field and have published groundbreaking research about the care and treatment of babies, kids and young adults with blood and clotting disorders.
