We Measure Our Own Outcomes at the Heart Institute

Heart Content Quality Patient Safety

We work hard to see that your child has access to safe and effective treatments in a family-centered environment. In fact, the Heart Institute at Children’s Hospital Colorado has some of the best patient outcomes of any pediatric hospital in the nation.

At Children’s Colorado, we evaluate our success by monitoring and comparing our outcomes with other nationally recognized programs. We also routinely check and update our quality and patient safety outcomes. Transparency with our patients and colleagues is one of the keys to our success.

Here are a few examples of the many things we measure in our efforts to monitor our own outcomes and compare our cardiac care to pediatric hospitals across the country:

Improving our quality of care

During the last five years, we have consistently improved the safety and quality of care throughout the Heart Institute. In addition to requiring quality metrics from each team within the Heart Institute, we perform weekly safety walk rounds, which help parents and staff have a voice in directing improvement initiatives.

  • We have decreased the incidence of skin injury in our patients by almost 20% in just one year’s time.
  • We continue to provide excellent nutrition and closely monitor each of our patient’s nutritional status to ensure your child consistently receives the best diet.
  • We have consistently maintained a low rate of central line associated blood stream infections across the Heart Institute.
  • We started the Transition to Home Initiative in 2013 to help decrease the number of unplanned re-admissions to the Heart Institute. The initiative ensures that every patient can transition home in the safest and most effective method.
