Children's Hospital Colorado is proud to announce its Advocacy Boot Camp - a new program for adults who want to learn how to advocate for children's health care issues that matter to them.
Consisting of nine monthly half-day sessions featuring expert speakers on a variety of advocacy-related topics, the hospital's Advocacy Boot Camp will resemble traditional leadership programs but will be geared toward teaching the fundamentals of becoming an effective advocate - be that at the Capitol, in your community, in your child's school or with your child's doctor.
Children's Colorado firmly believes that families should be able to get the health care they need when they need it, that decisions about your family's health care are too important to be left to others, and that every individual's voice matters. Advocacy Boot Camp is designed to teach people how to use their voices to bring about positive and lasting change related to children's health and access to care.
Through Advocacy Boot Camp, participants will:
- Learn how to develop and execute strategies to improve their communities and schools for children
- Be able to identify community resources and supports for children and understand how to utilize them
- Learn techniques for communicating with elected officials and other community leaders on behalf of children
- Develop public speaking skills and strategies
- Learn the importance of the media and social media and how to leverage them to make positive societal improvements for children
- Gain an understanding of the legislative process and state budgeting
- Be able to navigate the State Capitol
Understand how to speak up in a health care setting when working with doctors and other health care personnel
Interested individuals must apply to participate in Advocacy Boot Camp. The application deadline is Nov. 22, 2013.
Twenty participants will be chosen from among the pool of applicants for the 2014 program. The class will be selected with an eye for diversity, commitment to advancing children's health care issues and a dedication to collaboration and respect for differing viewpoints.
There is no charge to participate in Advocacy Boot Camp.
Children's Hospital Colorado's 2014 Advocacy Boot Camp begins on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014, at 9 a.m. and will run until noon. Following the first session, Advocacy Boot Camp will meet on the third Tuesday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon through September 2014. Participants are also expected to complete experiential learning assignments between sessions in order to build upon the sessions and facilitate discussion.
Although there are no tuition fees associated with the program, Advocacy Boot Camp offers a learning experience, and attendance at monthly meetings is required. More than two absences is cause for dismissal from the class.
