When John Fielder walked into The new Children's Hospital on the Fitzsimons Medical Campus for the first time, he had some very good memories pop back into his head.
"I bet I backpacked 60 miles to get that picture," he told us as he looked over a massive picture of Columbines.
Fielder, one of the state's most renowned photographers, donated a number of his photographs of some of the state's wildflowers so they could be used in the new hospital.
They've been blown up, put onto tiles, and placed onto the floor of the hospital's new dining area. The outdoor beauty of Colorado has been transplanted indoors.
This will be a very different Children's Hospital.
"I can't imagine why nature won't make the healing process better and faster right here at Children's Hospital," Fielder told us as he toured the new facility for the first time.
The hospital is about 85 percent complete. It's set to open in Aurora on September 29th. When designers were thinking about how they would construct the massive facility they actively tried to put themselves into the minds of the children who would inevitably have to come to the hospital.
They decided it had to be bright and open and they decided artwork would be critical in making sure that happened effectively.
"(Fielder's) artwork is world renowned. The fact that he cares about the healing process of children (here) just means the world," Jerrod Milton told us. Milton is the hospital's director of campus transition.
