Low-fat Milk Recommended for Some Toddlers
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released new guidelines this month stating that some babies as young as 12 months of age should be given two-percent milk instead of whole milk, which was the previous AAP recommendation. Stephen Daniels, MD, pediatrician-in-chief and member of the AAP’s Committee on Nutrition who wrote the recommendation, explained to Reuters Health that reduced-fat milk would be appropriate for children between 12 months and two years of age who are at higher-than-normal risk of becoming overweight or have a family history of high cholesterol, obesity or heart disease.
