About 100 Colorado children ages three to eight are expected to participate in a clinical trial this month, making them among the first in the world to test the H1N1 vaccine. A Denver physician is beginning a clinical trial this week for Novartis, which is one of several drug manufacturers racing to make a vaccine for the H1N1 virus. The vaccine was developed the same way as the seasonal flu shot, leaving medical experts confident there will be no problems.
Matthew F. Daley, MD, of Children's Hospital Colorado, has said "The technology is much more refined — only what needs to be in the vaccine is in the vaccine."
Dr. Daley describes looking at the differences of the vaccine now and the previous H1N1 vaccine. "It's a little like comparing the safety of cars in 2009, with air bags and everything, to the safety of cars in the '70s." The trial vaccine is said to be part of a global effort to mass produce an immunization by mid-October," he said.
