The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders Hosts Sibling Camp

The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children's Hospital Colorado recently hosted a one-day Sibling Camp for kids ages 6-10. While most days sick siblings are the center of attention for family, friends, and health care providers, the Sibling Camp is a special day focused entirely on the siblings of children in the hospital.

The camp serves as a safe place for the siblings of sick children to talk about their inner feelings, do art therapy, and play games. The kids even venture into the lab to look at tumors and cells to enhance their understanding of their siblings' diagnoses.

Allison Donahue, child life specialist at Children's, was interviewed by 9News and CBS4 about the camp. "When they understand a little more of what's happening to their sibling they're either not scared by it, it's familiar, they feel involved, and they feel like they're part of their sibling's treatment team," said Donohue. "A lot of times that's the first time that a child has heard that their feelings are normal."
