Children's Helps Battle Childhood Obesity

More efforts are being launched to eradicate childhood obesity as it continues to plague the nation at increasing heights.

Children's Hospital Colorado is amongst those dedicated to the fight. In an interview for nursezone.com, Renee Porter, RN, CPNP,ND, the obesity nurse coordinator, discussed the hospital's strategy for combating childhood obesity.

The Weight Management team takes a team approach, with each patient receiving information from multiple sources including a dietician, psychologist, physician, and recreation and exercise therapists. Solutions are offered to families on an individualized basis, taking into account lifestyle differences.

Porter adds that the battle needs to be waged outside of the hospital doors as well.

"A hospital can't do it alone. There needs to be collaborative efforts amongst many different groups," she said
