Kayla Kopp, 11, was diagnosed with an extremely rare condition called Sjogren-Larsson Syndrome when she was 18-months-old. The condition is so rare that Kayla is the only kid in Colorado who has been diagnosed, and one of five in the U.S. Fortunately, Children's Hospital Colorado has one of the top pediatric Gait Lab's in the the country with high-tech capabilities to treat patients like Kayla.
"The prevalence of the technology in the entertainment industry these days has made the technology much more accessible and efficient in medical settings," says Dr. Frank Chang, co-medical director of Children's Hospital Colorado Gait Lab in Denver.
Kayla was the last patient in the Gait Lab before Children's Denver moved to the new facility in Sept. 2007 and she recently was the Gait Lab’s 2000th clinical gait analysis patient. The Gait Lab hosted a “2000th patient” celebration in Kayla’s honor.
On top of the celebration, Kayla’s parents have started the non-profit Kids Mobility Network. The non-profit “recycles” durable medical equipment (wheelchairs, walkers, etc.) for children with disabilities, 90% of the recycled medical equipment goes to Children's Hospital Colorado families.
