Helmet Bill for Kids Takes a Step Closer

StateBillnews.com

Getting your child to wear a bike helmet can be quite a task. Fortunately, we are here to help. House Bill 1147- a law that would require kids to wear a bike helmet when riding a bicycle, skateboard or scooter- is one step closer to being passed, with the help of Children's and the community.

HB 1147 moved forward on April 1, passing through the Senate Education Committee. If the bill passes it would require any child over two years of age to wear a bike helmet while riding a bike, skateboard or scooter on a public roadway or public place. If a parent does not follow the appropriate safety precautions for their child they would be subject to an informational traffic citation.

“Enacting a helmet law provides parents with the leverage that they often need to get their kids to wear helmets,” injury prevention and education coordinator, Leslie Feuerborn, of Children's Hospital Colorado reminded us.
