Recognizing Pediatric Stroke
Channel 7 News
Children's Hospital Colorado recently teamed up with the Aurora Fire Department to train every EMT and paramedic to recognize the signs of pediatric stroke. Medical first responders now know to look for stroke symptoms such as facial drooping, inability to speak, or difficulty in forming words and arm drifting.
"Typically what it is, is a blood clot going up into the artery in the head, plugging off blood flow, and then blood can't get to an area of the brain and that area dies," explained Tim Bernard, MD, co-director of the Pediatric Stroke Program at Children's Hospital Colorado.
Dr. Bernard noted that six out of every 100,000 children will experience a stroke each year, which is why he says training first responders is critical.
