Children’s Hospital Colorado hosted a Topping Out ceremony for its East Tower, marking a significant milestone toward the completion of the $230 million project.

The new 10-story, 355,000-sq-ft. patient tower eventually will increase the number of beds at Children’s Colorado at the Anschutz Medical Campus to nearly 500, and increase the facility’s footprint to 1.79 million square feet. The state of the art medical tower is expected to be finished by late 2012.

Children's Colorado continues to grow

“We are experiencing dramatic growth here at Children’s Hospital Colorado. The East Tower will allow us to welcome that growth so we can continue to serve the children who need our care,” said Jim Shmerling, president and CEO, Children’s Hospital Colorado. “This project will expand our specialty care services and research programs, so that children in our community and across the region can continue to access the best care possible.”

The East Tower will be home to an expanded specialty service: The Colorado Institute for Maternal and Fetal Health, a collaboration between the University of Colorado Hospital, Children’s Hospital Colorado, and University of Colorado School of Medicine, will offer mothers, babies and their families unparalleled care and treatment before, during and after low or high-risk pregnancies.

The tower also will house several expanded specialty services, including:

Signing the final beam

In preparation for the topping out ceremony, the hospital gathered more than 1,000 signatures on the final beam from Children’s Colorado staff, patients and patient families, and construction workers. The final beam was adorned with an evergreen tree and two flags.

The construction team for the project is Phipps-McCarthy Construction and Balfour Concord, and it was designed by H+L Architecture and ZGF Architects LLP.
