How to Stay Mentally and Emotionally Fit in 2013
Whether or not you have a diagnosed mental condition, it is always a good idea to give proper attention to maintaining good mental and emotional health. Around the country, mental health continues to gain attention as an important aspect of public health, and at Children’s Colorado, behavioral health is as important as ever in 2013.
Get the New Year off to a great start by checking out some of these resources that could help maintain good mental and emotional health.
Art, singing and music
Creating art can make a positive impact on one’s health by providing an outlet for a wide range of emotions. But we’re not all inclined to break out the oils and canvas on our own, so for those who need motivation and/or instruction, the Denver Art Museum offers adult classes.
Like painting and drawing, singing and playing an instrument can provide a creative outlet for expression. Check out adult classes at the Denver Music Institute or Swallow Hill Music.
Performance art is yet another way to release feelings of anger, sadness, joy and happiness, among others. Colorado Ballet offers several dance classes, including ballet, tap, hip-hop and Zumba, for adults of all skill levels.
Breathe in and breathe out
Yoga, which places great emphasis on breathing, positive energy and peaceful thinking, can reduce stress.
The hospital’s chapel, located on the first floor of the main campus, is open to everyone. Use the space to pray, meditate or reflect, all of which can lead to better mental and emotional health. If you do go, be sure to respect the space by silencing your phone and avoid chatting with others. There is also a labyrinth on the chapel floor that encourages prayerful movement.
Write about it
