Little Girl Gives Gift of Life to Twin Brother at Children's
KKTV-CHANNEL 11
At the age of four, Ryan Stauffer was diagnosed with a very rare genetic disease known as Adrenoleukodystrophy. In order to save Ryan's life, the family needed a bone marrow doner for a transplant. They looked to Ryan's twin sister, Bella Stauffer for an exact match. Bella was taken to Children's Hospital Colorado where doctors took marrow from her hip bone for her brother.
Directly after her surgery at Children's Hospital Colorado, Bella's bone marrow was taken to a processing lab where all of the red blood cells were taken out, so that Ryan would get the best possible product. Once the bone marrow had been treated, Ryan received an IV filled with his twin sister's bone marrow.
According to Dr. Ralph Quinones of Children's, "If everything goes well, her bone marrow will grow, start creating new, healthy cells for Ryan, and cure him." Bella gave her brother the greatest gift she could ever give, the gift of life.
