Asthma and Allergy Awareness – Information You Can Use

Spring can be particularly hard for many children who suffer from asthma and allergies. May is National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month so we’re providing you with resources that might help to improve your child’s asthma and allergy symptoms.

Asthma Information

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nine million children in America are diagnosed with asthma, a chronic or acute inflammatory condition of the airways that can make breathing difficult. However, many children with asthma have not been diagnosed.

Our Summer 2009 edition of Shine is an excellent source of information on the diagnosis and treatment of asthma in children. Read more about how to recognize asthma in your child and how to care for a child with this condition.

Children's Hospital Colorado's asthma video education series shows parents and children how to properly use certain asthma medications and devices, such as inhalers. Watch the asthma education videos.

In addition, our KidsHealth Library of information is full of asthma education information for parents, kids and teens .

If you are interested in having your child seen for asthma at Children’s, please call (720) 777-6181 to schedule an appointment.

Allergy Information

Many children are allergic to things in the air or certain foods. Symptoms of allergic reactions vary greatly, but children may experience a runny nose, cough, sore throat, rash, upset stomach or their body may swell and get puffy in some places.

Coming to Children's Hospital Colorado for an allergy test can help you learn what allergies your child has and what medication options are available to prevent them from experiencing reactions, as well as what activities or foods to avoid. For more information, or to schedule an appointment with Allergy and Immunology, please call (720) 777-6181.
