Former Patient Sews Pillows to Raise Money for Children's

Boulder Daily Camera

Michelle Gaffney had her first back surgery in 2007 to fuse part of her spine in order to correct a severe case of scoliosis. Due to complications, including an infection, Michelle had to return to the hospital for three more surgeries. Now a sophomore at Boulder High School, Michelle is an official ambassador for the hospital and helped raise money for Children's by participating in Alice 105.9's Kids Radiothon.

"It feels awesome. I feel so lucky to do something good that's really rewarding," said Michelle. "I was thinking of things that people gave me while I was in the hospital that made me feel better, and I wanted to do something to give back to the hospital and bring that happiness to other kids. And I came up with the idea of sewing pillows."

Before Michelle's fourth surgery a year ago, and again around last Christmas, Michelle pulled a little red wagon through the halls of Children's Hospital Colorado handing out fuzzy, brightly colored pillows.

"We were able to hit every floor and every room in the hospital," Michelle said of her creative giveaway.

Michelle's recorded story can be found online at Alice1059.com.
