Children's Doc Discusses Pediatric Epilepsy and its Relation to Learning and Behavior

Amy Brooks-Kayal, MD, chair of neurology at Children's Hospital Colorado and professor of pediatrics at the University of Colorado, was quoted in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) about pediatric epilepsy and its relation to learning and behavior problems. The article in the January 27, 2010 issue of JAMA  highlights evidence that epilepsy and seizures may be components of other neurological diseases, and some researchers interviewed say epilepsy should be considered a spectrum disorder.

In the article, Brooks-Kayal says that epilepsy can influence kids' quality of life, school performance, and social and family interactions. “Children with epilepsy are at increased risk for learning and behavior problems compared to children with other chronic illness, siblings, or controls,” said Brooks-Kayal. “The kids, their parents, and numerous studies tell us that these problems are often more disabling than the seizures."
