Alice's 36 Hours for Kids: 10 Years of Inspiration
Jake Cohen: Cancer-free for nine years!
At Jake Cohen's one-year checkup, doctors felt a lump in his abdomen. That day, to the shock of his parents, Jake was diagnosed with stage IV neuroblastoma, the most advanced stage of the rare childhood cancer. Doctors found a tumor the size of a grapefruit growing in his abdomen and a CT scan revealed more tumors in his right lung and neck.
Just months after the diagnosis, Jake made his first appearance at the inaugural Alice's 36 Hours for Kids radiothon in 2001. Jake was receiving inpatient treatment; he and his family were in the midst of his battle with cancer when they sat down to share their experience with Alice 105.9 disc jockeys. Over the next three years, Jake endured intense chemotherapy, surgeries, radiation and a bone marrow transplant, spending an average 20 days per month in the hospital.
Since his toddler years, Jake has fought hard and beat great odds. Ten years after he first shared his story on the air during the 2001 Alice's 36 Hours for Kids radiothon, he is celebrating nine years cancer-free. The Cohen family continues to attend radiothon each year in celebration of the gift of life Children's gave to their family.
In 2011, Alice 105.9 and Children's Miracle Network Hospitals celebrate a 10-year partnership to produce Alice's 36 Hours for Kids, broadcasting countless stories of real patients and families treated at Children's and generating more than $10 million in community support for the hospital.
