What is a clinical trial?

A clinical trial - also known as a medical research study, protocol, survey or experiment - is a scientific study done to answer a health-related question. At Children's Hospital Colorado, our physician-scientists conduct clinical trials to learn more about pediatric diseases, medication and treatment for infants, kids and teens. Why are clinical trials important?

Research is the foundation for progress and advancement in medicine. Research findings from clinical trials have led to important discoveries that have improved the health, quality of life and longevity of kids and adults alike. For example, clinical trials are credited for the discovery of new drugs to treat cancer, diabetes and other diseases, in addition to ultrasound, X-ray and diagnostic tests.

Is my child eligible for a clinical trial?

Eligibility is determined on a trial-by-trial basis. Requirements may include age, weight, gender, medical history, current medical condition, disease(s) and/or medication. Please refer to specific clinical trials for details.

What questions should I ask?

Letting your child participate in research is an important decision. We appreciate your interest and encourage you to ask any questions you may have, such as:

  • Why is this clinical trial being done?
  • What do the researchers hope to accomplish?
  • What exactly will happen to my child during the trial (e.g. will you be testing a drug, vaccine, procedure, device, etc.)?
  • How long will the clinical trial last, and what does our commitment entail (e.g. appointments, medication, documentation, etc.)?
  • Are there any possible side effects or risks?
  • What potential benefits might be child receive from the study?
  • Can my child leave the trial at any time?
  • Are there any associated costs? Will we be reimbursed for our time and participation?

If your child or family is approached to be part of a clinical trial at Children's Hospital Colorado, consider the following before deciding if it is right for you:

  • A clinical trial may or may not help your child.
  • The results and findings of the trial could help other children around the world who have the same problem.
