Slow Eaters And Fast Eaters

Slow poky eaters are usually not hungry. A few are just being negative. A good rule for these kids is that the meal is over when everyone else is done eating. Then it's time to clean up. Clear away your child's plate and put her down. Don't keep her sitting at the table longer than other people. And, don't reserve her leftover food at the next meal. Also, don't give her in between meal snacks, if she only eats part of her meal. Better yet, at her next meal serve smaller portions.

Let's turn to kids who eat too fast. They're usually in a hurry to get back to their play. They may gulp their food in a most unsavory manner. A good rule for these kids is that "mealtime always lasts for 10 minutes" (or whatever length of time you decide upon). Also, tell them, "Mealtime is a special time, a time when our family gets together to eat and talk and have fun." Therefore, don't allow your child to leave the dinner table early, even if she eats quickly. Praise her for eating slowly and for interacting with the family during mealtime.

If you have other questions about your child's eating behavior, consult your healthcare provider.
