What Happened
Approximately 183,000 Evenflo Top-of-Stair Plus Wood Gates were recalled in the United States and Canada by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Health Canada, and Evenflo Co., Inc. due to a fall hazard. About 33,000 of the gates were recalled in Canada.
What This Means
The gate's slats can break or detach, posing a fall hazard to children.
In the United States, the manufacturer has received 142 reports of broken or detached slats. Of those incidents, three children gained access to stairs, and two fell down one or more steps. Eleven minor injuries were reported, including bumps, bruises, and scrapes. In Canada, 26 incidents were reported, with one minor injury.
The recall involves only Evenflo model numbers 10502 and 10512 made from October 2007 through July 2009. The model number and manufacture date can be found on the bottom rail.
Where This Product Was Sold
Toys"R"Us, Kmart, Burlington Baby Depot, and other juvenile product and mass merchandise retailers nationwide in the United States and Canada, as well as online at Amazon.com and other retailers from October 2007 through March 2010 for about $40.
What to Do Next
Immediately stop using the recalled gate and contact Evenflo to obtain a free newer model 10503 or 10513 Top-of-Stair Plus Wood replacement gate.
