Video Linkup Allows Durango Children With Down Syndrome To Visit Denver Doctors

The Westbrook family lives in Durango with 10 kids, five of whom have Down syndrome. Thanks to telemedicine and the Anna and John J. Sie Center for Down Syndrome, they are able to consult with our doctors and therapists from home. This results in more frequent assessments of their daughters’ speech patterns, physical development and cognitive abilities.

Telemedicine saves families time and money

Children’s Hospital Colorado saved 122 patients from having to make 160 visits to Denver from Southwest Colorado last year thanks to telemedicine, said Dr. John F. “Fred” Thomas, director of telemedicine. According to Dr. Thomas, that represents about nine months in travel time and $100,000 in travel expenses.
