The Trauma Center at Children’s Colorado was recently re-verified as a Level 1 Trauma Center by the Verification Review Committee (VRC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). This achievement recognizes the trauma center's dedication to providing the highest level of complex care for injured children, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Ensuring patients receive optimal trauma care

The American College of Surgeons Consultation/Verification Program for hospitals promotes the development of trauma centers across the country, by defining the hospital resources that are necessary to provide optimal trauma care for all injured patients. This spectrum of care encompasses the pre-hospital phase through the rehabilitation process.

Verified trauma centers must meet the essential criteria to ensure trauma care capability and institutional performance, as outlined by the ACS. The ACS Committee on Trauma's verification program provides confirmation that a trauma center has demonstrated its commitment to providing the highest quality trauma care for all injured patients.

The ACS does not designate trauma centers. The actual establishment and the designation of trauma centers is the function of local, regional or state healthcare systems agencies, such as the local emergency medical services (EMS) authority. The state of Colorado re-designated Children’s Colorado as a Level 1 Trauma Center at the July 12 Statewide Emergency Medical and Trauma Services Advisory Committee (SEMTAC) meeting.

Our mission is to get injured children back to the business of being kids

“There is no better place for a critically ill or injured child than a pediatric trauma center,” said Steven Moulton, MD, director of the Trauma and Burn Programs at Children's Colorado. “Children’s Colorado is the Rocky Mountain region's only Level 1 Regional Pediatric Trauma Center. The broad scope of our pediatric trauma program begins with prevention and includes pre-hospital care, emergency, diagnostic, surgical, acute and rehabilitation, as well as research, education and advocacy. It’s all part of our mission to help injured children get back to the business of being kids as quickly as possible.”

There are five separate categories of verification in the ACS's program (Level I Trauma Center, Level II Trauma Center, Level III Trauma Center, Level I Pediatric Trauma Center and Level II Pediatric Trauma Center), each with specific criteria that must be met by a facility seeking that level of verification. The level of verification is requested by the hospital. An on-site review of the hospital is conducted by a team of reviewers experienced in the field of trauma. Using the current Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient manual as a guideline, this team determines if the criteria for the requested level are met.
