5280 Top Doctors Issue Spotlights 78 Children’s Colorado Providers

Meeting unprecedented challenges and providing unparalleled care under pressure have long kept our providers at the top of their fields—and the top of awards lists. This year is no exception. For the 28th year, dozens of Children’s Hospital Colorado experts have been recognized by their peers in 5280’s Top Doctors issue for their innovation, outcomes and the work they do every day to advance their fields.

The 78 doctors listed below have shown their trademark commitment throughout the biggest medical crisis in 100 years, persevering to treat patients and find creative ways to solve problems. In May, for example, Children’s Colorado declared a State of Emergency for Youth Mental Health because young people statewide are experiencing skyrocketing rates of anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts.

This year’s Top Doctors issue features stories about the pandemic’s toll on young people’s mental health. One story includes Chief Medical Officer David Brumbaugh, MD, one of 5280’s Top Doctors, and Michael DiStefano, MD, chief medical officer of the Southern Region, sharing concerns about the numbers of children in crisis and what steps parents, communities and state leaders must take to help them. Their recommendations are even more urgent since Jason Williams, PsyD, operations director from our Pediatric Mental Health Institute, warns of the pandemic’s “major trailing mental health effects” that we have yet to see.

This rallying cry for additional youth mental health resources and support is just one example of our providers working to ensure our patients receive the care they need when they need it.
