What is retinopathy of prematurity?

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is an eye disease that can affect the vision of babies born early. The condition can range from mild to severe. Mild ROP may just need monitoring as the condition resolves on its own, but more severe ROP requires treatment to avoid long-lasting effects on vision. ROP is the leading cause of preventable blindness in children.

What causes retinopathy of prematurity?

The retina is a lining in the back of the eye. It captures light and transforms it into electrical signals. Those signals go to the brain, which interprets the signals as the images we see. The retina needs healthy blood vessels to function well. In premature babies, the blood vessels in the retina haven’t had enough time to develop before the baby is born. The blood vessels can continue to develop after birth but they can grow abnormally. In ROP, vessels can grow in the wrong direction, pulling on the retina and potentially causing it to detach and impair vision.

Who gets retinopathy of prematurity?

A full-term pregnancy is typically 38 to 42 weeks. ROP can occur in babies who are born who are born 30 weeks or earlier or who weigh 3 pounds or less at birth.

Not all premature babies get ROP. In addition to an early birth and low weight, babies can also be at higher risk for ROP if they have:

  • Poor overall health
  • Slow weight gain
  • Fluctuations in oxygen
