Bisacodyl (Dulcolax)

You can take bisacodyl to help treat constipation on a short-term basis.

It is a stimulant laxative. It stimulates the walls of the intestine causing the muscles to contract. This helps you have a bowel movement. Sometimes this type of drug can cause cramps.

Dose:

  • Dulcolax Laxative Suppository: Peel open plastic. Push suppository into the rectum, pointed end first. Keep it there for about 15 to 20 minutes. Use only once a day.
  • Dulcolax Laxative Tablet: Take 1 to 3 tablets. Swallow tablet whole, do not chew. Use only once a day. Do not take within 1 hour after taking an antacid or milk.

Extra Notes and Warnings:

  • This is an over-the-counter (OTC) drug. You can buy it at the drugstore.
  • Do not use for more than 1 week without talking to your doctor.
