Psyllium (Metamucil)

You can take psyllium fiber to help treat constipation on a long-term basis.

You can take psyllium (Metamucil) instead of eating more fiber. Fiber can help soften your stools. Fiber works by holding more water in your stools.

Dose:

  • Metamucil Powder: Stir and dissolve one teaspsoon of powder (17 g) in a cup (8 oz; 240 ml) of or water. Drink.
  • You can use this up to three times a day. However, it is better if you slowly increase how much you take over 1-2 weeks.

Extra Notes and Warnings:

  • This is an over-the-counter (OTC) drug. You can buy it at the drugstore.
  • Be patient. Sometimes this takes a couple weeks before it starts to work.
  • Do not use for more than 4 weeks without talking to your doctor.
