Glossary of Terms

Cannabis: the plant from which all marijuana, hemp and cannabinoid related products originate.

Concentrates: a concentrated form of THC, such as hash, wax tincture or cannabutter, used to quickly deliver the drug.

Dispensary: a facility where consumers/patients can purchase marijuana.

Edible: a marijuana product that can be eaten and contains THC. Some of the most common edibles include brownies, cookies, gummies and cake. Although effects vary from person to person, edibles tend to result in a much more intense and longer-lasting high than smoking. After consuming an edible, it generally takes 45-60 minutes for one to start feeling the effects (sometimes longer; again, it depends upon the individual). Learn more about marijuana intoxication.

Hemp: a soft, durable fiber produced from the cannabis plant. Hemp contains less than 0.3 percent THC, which has no effect on the body. Hemp can be used to make paper, fabric, plastic, building materials, and biofuels, and can also be used by farmers as weed control and water filtration.

Marijuana: the dried leaves and flowers of the cannabis plant, used for the variety of psychoactive and physiological effects it has when consumed. Marijuana can be vaporized, eaten, or smoked. Know the slang for marijuana.

Spice “synthetic marijuana”: refers to a wide variety of herbal mixtures that produce experiences similar to marijuana (cannabis) and that are marketed as “safe,” legal alternatives to that drug. Sold under many names, including K2, fake weed, Yucatan Fire, Skunk, Moon Rocks, and others — and labeled “not for human consumption” — these products contain dried, shredded plant material and chemical additives that are responsible for their psychoactive (mind-altering) effects.

Some spice products are sold as “incense,” but they more closely resemble potpourri. Like marijuana, spice is consumed mainly by smoking. Sometimes spice is mixed with marijuana or is prepared as an herbal infusion for drinking.

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC): one of the main chemicals in marijuana that gets a user “high”; a larger proportion of THC will produce a stronger high. Without THC, a user cannot get high.
