Pediatric kidney care

The Kidney Center at Children's Hospital Colorado serves as a regional referral center for patients with kidney disease. For more than 30 years, our specially trained clinical staff has provided a wide range of services to patients with kidney disease, from diagnosing and treating mild conditions to providing chronic dialysis and kidney transplantation.

The Kidney Center sees several thousand patients each year and serves as the only 100% pediatric dialysis center in Colorado. We are proud to be at the forefront of research and teaching efforts to improve processes for transplants and dialysis.

Whether your child has a common kidney disease or is experiencing kidney failure, chronic dialysis and the possibility of kidney transplantation, our specially trained and experienced physicians, nurses and other clinical staff are here to care for your child.

We believe that being trained in pediatrics means being trained to care for the entire family. We educate parents and siblings, allow parents to be a part of their child's treatments and train parents to provide dialysis at home if their child receives peritoneal dialysis.

Specific conditions treated

As part of our multidisciplinary approach, we work closely with other departments to better coordinate care. For example, conditions that require urinary tract surgery are treated in conjunction with the Urology department.

• End-stage renal disease (ESRD)

• Glomerulonephritis (GN) (including post-strep GN, chronic GN, Henoch Schonlein Purpura (HSP)-related GN and systemic lupus erythemotosis (SLE) GN
• Hematuria (blood in the urine)
• Nephrotic syndrome and proteinuria
• IgA nephropathy
• Renal tubular acidosis
• Pediatric kidney stones
• Polycystic kidney disease
• High blood pressure (hypertension) from urological problems
• Chronic kidney disease from urological problems
• Hemolytic uremic syndrome
• Alport syndrome
• Bartters syndrome
• Gittlemans syndrome
• Hyperoxalosis
• Oxaluria

Services offered

At the Children's Colorado Kidney Center, we have the expertise and experience to diagnose and treat common and complex renal conditions in kids. Some of our services include:

• Kidney biopsy   
• Dialysis programs, including inpatient dialysis, hospital-based (hemodialysis) outpatient dialysis and home-based (peritoneal) dialysis
• Kidney transplantation
