Preparing for Spine Surgery at Children's Hospital Colorado

Patients attend Spine Class before surgery

The spine team at Children’s Colorado knows that spine surgery can feel scary and overwhelming, so we created a special class to help kids prepare. Patients and families attend a Spine Class one to two months before surgery. When you come to Class you’ll find out what to expect before, during and after spine surgery.

During Spine Class, patients and families will:

  • Tour Children’s Colorado to see the Surgery Center, patient rooms and other hospital amenities.
  • Hear from expert speakers on the spine care team including nurses, a physical therapist, a child life specialist and a respiratory therapist.
  • Get answers to questions about anesthesia, pain management, recovery and more.
  • Meet a Children’s Colorado patient who recently had a similar surgery and listen to his or her story.

You’ll have the chance to ask our patient speaker anything. He or she will tell you:

  • How was his/her stay at Children’s Hospital Colorado?
  • How did he/she beat boredom while recovering from surgery at home?
  • How long after spine surgery did he/she get back to regular activities?
  • What activities is he/she participating in now?
  • What is life like after spine surgery?
  • Tips and tricks for an easier recovery.
