Meet Brian Branchford, MD

I was drawn to pediatrics because of the joy I get from a child's smile, and the refreshing innocence of a patient who just want to hurry up and take the medicine and then go out and play. Therefore, I make a point to interact with the child as well as talking with the parents about the child. I strive to ensure that my patients understand their disease itself, as well as their treatment options, which is usually accomplished by some combination of me thinking out loud, making analogies, and/or drawing blood vessels on the paper covering the exam table. When faced with a choice of several treatments of relatively equal safety and efficacy, I invite the patients/parents to participate in the decision by discussing their prioritization of the secondary characteristics of the various treatment options.

Get to know his background

I treat infants, children, adolescents, and young adults with all manner of non-malignant blood diseases, though my focus is in bleeding and clotting disorders. I co-lead local and national quality/process improvement groups with the goal of reducing the rate of blood clots developed by hospitalized children. In order to better understand this disease, and thus develop better preventative strategies, I have a basic science lab in which I study platelet activation responses and animal models of blood clotting, and I also have an active clinical research interest in characterizing the inherited/genetic and acquired/environmental risk factors for blood clot development in children.
