Children’s Hospital Colorado has been named to the Forbes list of America's Best Employers For Women 2022. Children’s Colorado is ranked No. 92 on the 400-company list. With 24 varying industry categories, the Healthcare & Social industry category includes just 35 organizations nationwide, and only three other stand-alone pediatric centers in the country.

A team of female leaders and champions

Children’s Colorado employs more than 8,000 people, 83.4% of whom are women. The pediatric hospital system is led by a woman President and CEO, Jena Hausmann, who has been recognized as a Most Admired CEO for her work with Children’s Colorado.

“Children’s Colorado’s team members are our greatest asset,” said Hausmann. “Our leadership team – made up of men and women – champions women. We ask what employees need to thrive, both at work and at home. Actively listening to our team members means actively listening to women and using their input to continually reimagine and redesign our team member experience.”

Pioneering improvements

Forbes compiled the list by surveying 50,000 Americans working for companies with at least 1,000 employees on topics such as parental leave, family support, flexibility, discrimination, representation and career and pay equity. Having women in executive management or board positions was also evaluated. Programs and benefits that propelled Children’s Colorado into the Top 100 range from increased mental health support for families, to lactation rooms and childcare, to unique flex times and professional development opportunities. In addition to prioritizing mental health for all team members, Children’s Colorado is pioneering improvements to the youth mental health system with the addition of the nation’s first woman Mental Health-in-Chief, Ron-Li Liaw, MD.

Promoting health and wellness

“We’re modernizing the workplace with flexibility and balance,” said Betsy Rodriguez, Chief Human Resources Officer for Children’s Colorado. “We strive to promote health and wellness in our employees and families – because if they’re thriving, they’re able to provide better care for the patients and families our hospital serves.”

Employee-informed programs

Children’s Colorado uses information from team members, as both parents and employees, to shape and inform programs for patients and communities they serve. As such, more families now have access to mental health care as well as expanded fertility and infertility benefits. Children’s Hospital Colorado, Colorado Springs was designated the first lactation-friendly workplace in the state by the Colorado Breastfeeding Coalition in 2022 and other Children’s Colorado locations have breastfeeding-friendly designation status through Tri-County Health Department.

Clear path for career advancement

Nurses, who make up a large percentage of the workforce, have access to a Clinical Advancement Program, which offers a clear path for career advancement. All employees have access to professional development programs, as well, such as leadership programs, coaching and mentoring, and access to online learning.
