What is a Meckel’s diverticulum?

Meckel’s diverticulum is a small bulge or outpouching that forms on the small intestine. A Meckel’s diverticulum normally does not cause any symptoms, but rarely can cause bleeding into the intestine. If this happens, your child’s doctor may recommend surgery to remove it.

What causes a Meckel’s diverticulum?

Meckel’s diverticulum is congenital, meaning that it is present at birth. The pouch forms on the intestine while a baby is developing before birth.

Who gets a Meckel’s diverticulum?

Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital condition of the gastrointestinal tract. About 2% of babies are born with it.
