Pediatric Neurology Program

At Children's Hospital Colorado, we evaluate and treat infants, children and teens with neurological disorders of the central and peripheral nervous systems.

As a major referral center for the western United States, we also provide consultation, ongoing care and diagnostic services to identify, characterize and treat neurological problems in children, adolescents and young adults.

Our Pediatric Neurology Program is a nationally recognized leader in the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy and seizure disorders, headaches, neuromuscular diseases, movement disorders, pediatric strokes, genetic disorders affecting the nervous system, developmental delays, disorders of muscle tone and other neuromuscular diseases.

The pediatric Neurology Program sees and treats more than 18,000 children each year, and our staff has special training focused solely on caring for the needs of kids. In addition, our pediatric neurology clinics are enhanced by other child-centered services provided by other departments on site, such as lab and radiology.

Our model of care

Our pediatric neurology specialists function under a team model to provide children and their families comprehensive services. We go the extra mile to get to know and understand your child, not just their medical problems.

• Our health team includes neurologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, residents, fellows, neuropsychologists, neuropsychology technicians, registered nurses, medical assistants, social workers, nutritionists and electroencephalogram (EEG) technologists.
• Because we are a teaching institution, we frequently have medical students, nurse practitioner students, physician assistant students and nursing students visit. These students will see your child and discuss your child’s history and presenting symptoms. Then they will work with your child’s team to coordinate an individualized plan of care.

Research for cures and advanced treatment

Physician-scientists within our pediatric Neurology Program also conduct advanced scientific research in epilepsy, headache, muscle disorders and pediatric stroke. Faculty members are active in neuroscience research that will lead to improved treatment options for children with neurological disorders, including research on the use of medical marijuana for epilepsy in children.

We are also leaders in numerous national and international societies devoted to the treatment and understanding of pediatric neurological disorders including the Child Neurology Society, American Epilepsy Society, International Pediatric Stroke Study and Society for Neuroscience.

Scheduling an appointment

At Children’s Colorado, children are treated in our general neurology and specialty clinics. Your primary care provider will work with our team to determine which one of our clinics is the right place for your family to start.

You may call to schedule a pediatric neurology appointment or an appointment can be made by referral from your pediatrician, family doctor or other healthcare provider.

The pediatric Neurology Program’s office and most of its clinics are located at our Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado. Clinical services are also provided through the Children's Colorado Network of Care throughout the Denver metro region and in Colorado Springs.

Before your appointment

Before coming to a scheduled appointment at any of the pediatric neuroscience clinics, please review the Neurology New Patient Information Packet for that location and print out and complete the Neurology New Patient History Form.

It is important that we receive all of your child’s medical records including any diagnostic tests before your child’s visit. If you have records from outside Children's Hospital Colorado, please fax them to 720-777-7285 prior to your child’s appointment or bring them with you. Please provide X-rays (MRI, etc.) and electroencephalogram (EEG) on a disk and bring bottles of all current medications.

Verifying benefits and coverage

Not all services may be covered by your insurance plan. Prior to your visit, please contact your insurance company to verify your benefits and coverage.

Your plan may require a referral, have a network restriction, co-payments, deductibles, or other out-of-pocket expenses that you should be aware of prior to the appointment. Our specialists are community-based, or employed by University of Colorado Medicine (CU Medicine), a physician practice management group. Please also verify that the physician you will be seeing is a participating provider for your insurance plan.

What to expect at your child’s appointment

You should plan to be with our neurology team for up to two hours on the day of your appointment. You may bring snacks and quiet entertainment. WiFi is available in the outpatient waiting area.
