If your son or daughter has been diagnosed with any form of cancer, you’ll naturally have a lot of questions. This page provides various types of resources that a child or family might need based on a child’s diagnosis. It may include background education on specific types of cancers and tumors, information about support groups and patient stories from children and families who have experience dealing with these conditions.

Surgical oncology patient education and support groups

American Cancer Society is on a mission to free the world from cancer through funding and conducting research, sharing expert information, supporting patients and spreading the word about prevention. The website offers educational information and news on research.

Children’s Oncology Group is a National Cancer Institute-supported clinical trials group and the world’s largest organization devoted exclusively to childhood and adolescent cancer research.

CureSearch for Children’s Cancer is a nonprofit foundation working to find and accelerate cures for childhood cancer.

National Cancer Institute (NCI) is the U.S. government’s principal agency for cancer research, providing the most recent advances in cancer prevention, detection, diagnosis and survivorship. As the leader of the cancer research enterprise, collectively known as the National Cancer Program and the largest funder of cancer research in the world, NCI manages a broad range of research, training and information dissemination activities that reach across the entire country, meeting the needs of all demographics—rich and poor, urban and rural and all racial/ethnic populations.

Surgical oncology patient education and support groups – specific conditions

The Kidney Cancer Association promotes scientific advances, provides a robust grant program for research, participates in legislative advocacy and seeks to be a source of education and resources for patients, caregivers and anyone impacted by kidney cancer.

The American Liver Foundation promotes education, advocacy, support services and research for the prevention, treatment and cure of liver disease.

The Testicular Cancer Society raises awareness for the most common form of cancer in men age 15 to 35, to provide education about the disease and give support for fighters, survivors and caregivers.

The Testicular Cancer Awareness Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the fight against testicular cancer through awareness and outreach.

The Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative is a global initiative that aims to improve lives by increasing sarcoma awareness and funding high-quality research. Their website provides information and various resources about treatment, research and clinical trials.

This online Adrenal Cancer Support reference provides links to online resources that focus on research and support for those with adrenal cortical carcinoma and their families.

This Wilms Tumor Facebook Support Group connects people with Wilms Tumor to share information and provide support for each other.

Wellness Program for Patients and Families

At Children’s Colorado, we offer a comprehensive cancer wellness program for patients who are receiving cancer treatment and their families. Our multidisciplinary team helps teach you and your child effective coping and emotional adjustment methods. We also provide psychosocial support that specifically addresses the challenges that children with cancer and their families most often encounter. Childhood Leukemia - The Connection Journey

While leukemia isn’t a cancer that we would specifically deal with in surgical oncology, it is a cancer that has affected many children. We believe there are some parallels to this story that many of our patients will be able to connect with.
