Children's Hospital Colorado

Advocacy Project for Formula and Diaper Insecurity (S5:E34)

For many people, the excitement of having a new child is accompanied by stress and financial burden. Many families and caregivers struggle to afford essential items such as diapers and formula that can, directly and indirectly, affect a child’s overall health. While these insecurities were already a problem before COVID, the situation has been exacerbated by the pandemic and subsequent supply chain issues.

Listen to pediatric experts discuss formula and diaper insecurity

In this episode, Alisa Chandrabose, MBA, RN, and Brooke Pfister, MD, join us to discuss how to ensure that patients and families are adequately screened for diaper and formula needs.

Alisa is the Director of Ambulatory and Satellite Services and Dr. Pfister is a chief resident at Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

In this episode, our experts discuss:

  • Adapting and expanding the program during the pandemic
  • Existing research on diaper needs and consequences to a child’s health
  • Caregiver screening tools used for in-person clinic visits
  • The referral and distribution process for providing resources based on identified needs
  • Key findings from two years of patient screening data
