Updated Hyperbilirubinemia Management Guidelines (S6:E8)

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recently revised clinical guidelines on hyperbilirubinemia. Although it's common for many newborns to experience jaundice, physicians and primary care providers need to understand and monitor these patients to ensure they don't develop hyperbilirubinemia.

Listen to pediatric experts discuss the new hyperbilirubinemia guidelines

In this episode, Christine Gold, MD, joins us to discuss what primary care providers should know about these new guidelines and how they differ from the previous guidelines.

In this episode, our experts discuss:

  • How newborns develop hyperbilirubinemia
  • What was missing in the previous guidelines and why the AAP developed new guidelines
  • Changes to thresholds for phototherapy curves
  • Risk factors for developing hyperbilirubinemia versus neurotoxicity risk factors
  • Why acidosis was removed as a neurotoxicity risk factor
  • How to interpret the graphs for each gestational age
  • How to use the transcutaneous bilirubin tool
  • Why the guidelines will help reduce the use of phototherapy
