What is cavus foot?

Cavus foot (also called pes cavus) is a foot with a very high arch. It affects how the foot functions and can make it difficult to find shoes that fit properly.

Children with cavus foot put more pressure on the balls of their feet and heels when walking. Having a high arch also makes your foot less stable on the ground. Cavus foot can lead to foot pain, stress fractures, callus formation and ankle sprains.

What causes cavus foot?

In most cases, children are not born with cavus foot. Instead, it develops over time. Cavus foot most often occurs in children who have an underlying neurological condition. Usually, it develops in both feet.

One of the most common causes of cavus foot is Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease. CMT is an inherited neuromuscular disease that damages nerves in the arms and legs. Another common cause is spina bifida. Babies born with spina bifida have spines that don’t completely cover and protect the spinal cord. Children born with other spinal cord issues (such as a split or tethered cord) may also develop cavus foot.

All of those conditions cause muscle weakness and imbalances that affect the structure of the feet, leading to high arches.
