Surgery at Children's Hospital Colorado

When you arrive at the Anschutz Medical Campus

• Park in the visitor parking garage, south of the main entrance.
  • Complimentary valet parking is available at the main entrance from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
• Check in at the Information/Welcome Desk just inside the hospital entrance.
• Go to the Admission/Patient Access area. It is just past the Information Desk, on the right side of the main entrance, labeled with pink numbered blocks from 1 to 6. You’ll fill out paperwork and receive hospital bracelets.
• A Patient Access team member guides you to one of four waiting areas:
  • Procedure Center on the 1st floor
  • Ponzio Surgery Center on the 2nd floor
  • Heart Institute waiting area on the 3rd floor
  • Maternal Fetal Surgery on the 4th floor in the East Tower
• Go to the admit area:
  • Finish necessary paperwork and answer questions about your child's health history.
  • Tell the staff if your child has a rash, is ill (fever, cough/cold, vomiting or diarrhea) or has an infection called methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
  • Your child's nurse listens to their heart, checks their temperature and does any other necessary tests.
  • Some children will need to give a urine sample or have a blood test done.
  • You meet with your child's surgeon or proceduralist (physician who will perform the procedure), anesthesiologist and nurse who will be with your child during the surgery or procedure.
  • You have a chance to ask questions about the surgery or procedure and anesthesia. You may want to talk about your child's recovery, pain, care or appearance after the procedure.
  • Your child's surgeon or proceduralist will confirm with you where the surgery or procedure will take place on your child's body and may mark the site on your child's skin with a special marker.
• Wait in the reception area. Parents will wait in a comfortable waiting area during your child's surgery or procedure. If you need to leave the area, give your cell phone number to the person at the desk. If you don’t have a cell phone, we can give you a pager so we can reach you with information or updates.
• The reception area has:
  • Staff or volunteers to guide you through the process
  • A phone you can use free of charge
  • TV and a play area for children
  • A place where you can use cell phones
  • Wireless internet connection

• Someone from Patient Access will call you over to the check-in area.
  • Check-in is to the right of the Welcome Desk, labeled with yellow numbered blocks from 1 to 3. Here you will fill out some paperwork and receive hospital identification bracelets.
  • A team member will guide you to Surgical Services on the 2nd floor.
• Go to the Surgical Services waiting room:
  • There, you’ll finish necessary paperwork and answer questions about your child's health history.
  • Your child's nurse will listen to your child's heart, check their temperature and do any other necessary tests.
  • The provider will do a history and physical if it wasn't done prior to the day of surgery.
  • Some children will need to give a urine sample or have blood tests.
  • You will meet with your child's surgeon or proceduralist (physician who will perform the procedure), anesthesiologist and nurse who will be with your child during the surgery or procedure.
  • You’ll have a chance to ask questions about the surgery or procedure and anesthesia. You may want to talk about your child's recovery, pain, care or appearance after the procedure.

  • You may have a chance to meet with a therapeutic recreation/child life specialist (TR/CL) who can help teach and prepare your child for the surgery or procedure. We can decrease your child's fears about their upcoming experience by giving just the right amount of information, based on their age and situation. These services can also help you become more familiar with hospital procedures and information. To request TR/CL services, please call 720-478-4001.
