Transition to Practice Program for Adult to Pediatric Nursing

What to expect from our Transition to Practice Program
The TTP Program for Adult to Pediatric Nursing at Children’s Colorado consists of three, eight-hour days of hands-on and didactic learning that emphasizes the fundamentals of caring for various pediatric ages and developmental stages. We focus on combining nurses’ existing clinical skills with insights into unique pediatric pathologies, while fostering effective communication with patients and caregivers. The program aims to ensure that every nurse feels confident and competent in providing high-quality care to our patients and families.
The TTP Program complements ongoing, unit-specific onboarding education and training for each of our nursing specialties and is designed to align with Children’s Colorado’s Team Member Orientation. The classes occur early in the new hire’s orientation, typically the week following orientation.
The program is open to nurses of all specialties at all our locations throughout the Denver metro area and Colorado Springs.
Eligibility requirements
- Experience: Minimum of one year in adult healthcare settings
- Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN); applicants with an Associate Degree in Nursing who agree to obtain a BSN within 3 years from their start date may be considered
- Licensure and registration: Registered Nurse (RN) license; BLS/CPR from the American Heart Association with at least 6 months left before expiration is required upon hire

The New to NICU RN Transition to Practice Program supports experienced nurses seeking to grow their clinical practice by transitioning into neonatal pediatric care in the NICU. This program offers a tailored orientation, including fundamental didactic and specialty courses, simulation-based education, clinical time on the unit and phased progress monitoring focused on specialty competency.
All BSN- or ADN-prepared nurses with at least one year of nursing experience are eligible to apply for the New to NICU RN Transition to Practice Program. The program takes place at our hospitals on the Anschutz Medical Campus and in Colorado Springs and lasts 8-10 weeks with an individualized orientation plan based on prior experience.

The Ambulatory Pediatric Transition to Practice Program supports experienced registered nurses as they transition from acute and critical care settings to ambulatory care. The six- to eight-month program provides evidence-based education to bridge the gap between what nurses learn in their academic training and the diverse skillsets required to practice in this clinical environment.
Ambulatory nurses at Children’s Colorado work in outpatient settings, such as primary care and medical and surgical specialty care. This program supports nurses at all our locations throughout the Denver metro area and Colorado Springs and includes a mix of both in-person and virtual classes.

Our residency program for new graduate nurses offers training, guidance and a supportive environment to start your career at a top-ranked pediatric hospital. The program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and focuses on providing evidence-based support and education for pediatric nurses in their first year of transition to professional practice.

Frequently asked questions about our TTP Program for Adult to Pediatric Nursing
As one of the many benefits for team members at Children’s Colorado, there is no cost for qualified participants. All orientation hours, classes, and clinical time are paid at the hourly rate of hire.
Yes, any nurse who is new to Children’s Colorado with previous adult experience is welcome to attend. However, the pilot results indicate the program benefits increase the earlier classes are taken to their Team Member Orientation start date.
Yes, this is a comprehensive program that was strategically designed for experienced nurses with a background in adult care to adapt their previous nursing experience into the pediatric setting.
Exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis with the unit Clinical Education Specialist (CES) and Professional Development team.
This program is only offered in-person to allow time for hands-on skills practice and social connection. A virtual option is not currently available.
Participants should contact the program coordinator for any unplanned absences. Currently, there are no make-up classes available.
