When a child experiences a medical emergency or needs a complex level of care, pediatric expertise is critical, both in the hospital and on the way there. Children’s Hospital Colorado is proud to provide emergency medical transport services for infants, kids and teens across Colorado – and beyond – through our Children’s One fleet.
About Children’s One emergency transport
Children’s Colorado partners with REACH Air Medical Services to provide emergency medical transport services for neonatal and pediatric patients. We transport children from birth to age 18, offering critical care air and ground transport from all Colorado counties, our seven-state region, the U.S. and even other countries, thanks to REACH’s 400-aircraft backup fleet.

Our emergency flight team members
All clinical flight team members have a minimum of four years of critical care experience with broad training in neonatal medicine, pediatric medicine and pediatric critical care. A multidisciplinary group of physician medical directors oversees Children’s One, providing expertise in fields including neonatology, pediatric critical care and emergency medicine.
Our emergency team members include:
- Pediatric emergency nurses
- Pediatric respiratory therapists
- Pediatric emergency medical technicians (EMTs)
- A specialized team of pilots, crew, mechanics, communication specialists and support staff
Our emergency fleet
The Children’s One emergency fleet includes:
- An Airbus H-130 helicopter with the latest safety features and autopilot system
- A Pilatus PC-12 fixed wing plane that offers the capability to land in more rural communities with shorter runways
- Two dual-load ambulances capable of transporting twins
All Children’s One transportation vehicles are equipped with pediatric-specific technology including high frequency ventilators and nitric oxide therapy. This allows our team to provide lifesaving emergent care while transporting patients to a Children’s Colorado emergency department, children’s surgery center or critical care unit.
Our vehicles are specially tailored to kids, designed to make the transport experience as comfortable and seamless as possible for patients and parents alike. For example, we provide toys and entertainment in our ambulances to help distract patients from emergency procedures and reduce their perception of pain. Our vehicles also offer more interior space for additional caregivers and lifesaving equipment.
History of Children’s Colorado’s flight team
Our flight team was founded in 1974 by neonatologist L. Joseph Butterfield, MD, who saw the need to bring the tiniest patients from around the region to the Children’s Colorado Newborn Center, our modern day neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). We’re proud to continue Dr. Butterfield’s legacy by providing premature infants and children of all ages with world-class emergency transport through Children’s One.
