A Diabetes Breakthrough: New Drug to Delay the Onset of Clinical Disease

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) affects approximately one in every 300 individuals under 20 years old. Although insulin remains the cornerstone for T1D treatment, it doesn't alter the underlying autoimmune condition. Even with advances like more physiological insulin analogs, continuous glucose monitoring and automated insulin delivery systems, the majority of those with T1D fail to meet therapeutic targets tied to a reduced long-term risk of complications. The management of T1D can be costly, complex and emotionally draining for both patients and their families. New methods that change the natural course of T1D, instead of merely treating hypoglycemia, could significantly improve both quality of life and health outcomes.

Listen to our pediatric expert discuss advancements in diabetes management

In this episode, Kimber Simmons, MD, joins us to explore early diagnosis strategies for T1D that can not only predict but also prevent or delay the disease's onset during its preclinical stages. We also delve into an innovative medication that holds the promise of postponing the onset of clinical T1D. "This will fundamentally change how we manage Type 1 diabetes in the future," Dr. Simmons says.

Dr. Simmons is not just a specialist in her field; she was diagnosed with T1D at the age of 8. She currently serves as an associate professor of pediatrics and pediatric endocrinology and is a practicing pediatric endocrinologist at Children’s Hospital Colorado and the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes.

In this episode, our expert discusses:

  • How the predictability of T1D has changed over the years
  • Accessibility and expansion of screening programs worldwide
  • Stages of T1D
  • Screening and intervention timelines
  • New breakthrough medication, a monoclonal antibody, approved in the U.S. to delay the onset of clinical T1D
