Using 3D models to perfect surgeries
Sometimes the best way to understand and treat a patient’s heart is to really see it. 3D printed heart models allow us to do that without surgery. Using information from cardiac MRIs, CT scans and cardiac catheterization, we can print an exact anatomical model of your child’s heart to help us better plan and execute procedures.
Customized heart care, just for kids
Using VR to advance heart care
In the Children’s Colorado Heart Institute, we put virtual reality to work in creative ways. For example, our doctors use VR to visualize the inside of a patient’s heart and improve procedures, while also keeping kids more comfortable. In fact, they have studied the use of VR as a successful replacement for anesthesia in some cases.
Keeping kids safer during imaging
Some approaches to imaging can expose kids to radiation, and while this is sometimes necessary, we work hard to employ advanced techniques, such as 4D imaging, to minimize exposure when possible. Not only is this imaging better, but it’s safer.
Anesthesia expertise for rare diseases
At the Heart Institute, we care for kids with virtually any condition, including rare ones like multisystem smooth muscle dysfunction syndrome (MSMDS). For these patients, anesthesia can be more dangerous and is needed frequently. Our pediatric cardiac anesthesia team created a customized approach to ensure kids with MSMDS can get through anesthesia safely.
Care that lasts a lifetime
Congenital heart conditions last a lifetime, so care for them should too. Here, we ensure patients get consistent care into adulthood through Children’s Hospital’s Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program. We also work with teens and adolescents to ensure the transition to this program is as easy and comfortable as possible.

Mandie Lynn’s minimally invasive care
Born 15 weeks early, Mandie Lynn was one of the tiniest patients to receive cardiac catheterization, a minimally invasive procedure doctors used to treat her patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). This condition used to require open heart surgery, but the new technique had Mandie Lynn’s PDA patched up in just 30 minutes.
Juniper’s story
Just weeks into her life, Juniper was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition that would be fatal without transplant. With the help of a Berlin Heart device that pumped blood around her tiny body, she spent six months living at Children’s Colorado before finally getting her new heart.
