About the Diabetes Center

The Diabetes Center at Children’s Hospital Colorado in Colorado Springs provides care and support for children with diabetes and their families. The Center is proud to be certified as an Education Recognition Program by the American Diabetes Association, which means we meet the highest standard for helping children and families learn to manage diabetes. We provide comprehensive care for hundreds of children with diabetes, with a focus on type 1 diabetes.

From the onset of diabetes and diagnosis to transitional adult care, we not only care for kids and teens, but provide support and resources for their families, too. Our care team includes doctors who specialize in treating diabetes, dietitians, nurse, a social worker, family health navigators and a clinical psychologist. Our team of diabetes educators includes certified diabetes care and education specialists who are passionate about helping people with diabetes thrive.

Why choose us for pediatric diabetes care

We partner with children and their families to provide high-quality, individualized care uniquely designed for each child. Our team knows the challenges children face while managing diabetes and we’re here to answer questions and provide information that every child can understand.

Diabetes care relies heavily on technology. These medical devices assist in delivering insulin and measuring blood sugar. We stay up to date with the latest technology in insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors so our patients and families have the best and most modern medical equipment to help manage diabetes. As a children’s hospital, we also take extra steps to make sure the children using the monitors and pumps understand how each device works.

Who we treat at the Diabetes Center

We care for children and teens with type 1 diabetes or other rare forms of pediatric diabetes, such as maturity onset diabetes of the young (MODY), from the onset of diabetes to early adulthood. We typically start helping teens transition into adult care between 18 and 22 years old. Our recommendation on when to start adult care depends on several factors, including behavioral and mental conditions your child may have. We tailor our care and recommendations on a case-by-case basis and consider all factors so ensure a successful transition to adult care.
