The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children's Hospital Colorado has one of the best pediatric hematology, oncology (cancer care) and bone marrow transplant programs in the country. We treat kids, adolescents and young adults from birth through mid-20s with cancer and non-malignant blood disorders.

At our center, we understand how a cancer diagnosis affects not just your child, but the entire family – which is why our team of pediatric experts is here to help.

Our pediatric cancer and blood disorder programs

The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders has a variety of programs that provide high-quality, multidisciplinary care to children with cancer and blood disorders.

Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Care Program

The Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Care Program, or AYA Cancer Program, is the only program in the region geared specifically toward teens and young adults living with cancer. From puberty to about age 25, adolescents and young adults respond differently to cancer treatment than younger children and older adults. Our AYA oncology specialists have been studying and treating cancer in this specific age group since these differences were first discovered.

Bone Marrow Transplant Program

Providers in our Bone Marrow Transplant Program specialize in pediatric bone marrow transplants and cellular therapy. Our program is one of the most experienced pediatric bone marrow transplant programs in the country. It is also an approved transplant site of the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), the Children's Oncology Group (COG) and the Pediatric BMT Consortium.

Cancer Predisposition Clinic

If you think there may be hereditary cancer in your family, our Cancer Predisposition Clinic offers genetics consultations. By talking with a genetic counselor, you will learn how cancer can be inherited and what steps can be taken to prevent and detect cancer as early as possible.

Experimental Therapeutics Program

Our Experimental Therapeutics Program serves patients who have recurrent cancer, a disease that has not responded to typical chemotherapy treatments or a diagnosis that has no reasonable cure. Our program offers children, adolescents and young adults access to phase one trials, many of which are first-in-pediatrics protocols available at a very limited number of institutions.

Genetic Counseling for Patients with Blood Disorders

We offer genetic counseling to patients and families with hereditary (genetic) blood disorders. While many factors may play a role in developing a blood disorder, some conditions result from underlying hereditary changes. Identifying a hereditary blood disorder can help us deliver the best treatment for your child and treat the same condition in other family members or future children.

Hematology Program

The Hematology Program at Children's Colorado is comprised of a variety of specialists who provide both physical and emotional care for children with blood disorders. Our program is internationally recognized for its expertise in hemophilia, bleeding and clotting disorders, hematological diseases and immuno-hematological diseases.

Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center

Pediatric experts at our Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center provide treatment and management of hemophilia and thrombosis in children and adults. Our close relationship with the University of Colorado Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center enables us to provide seamless care for children with bleeding disorders and continued support as they grow into adults.

HOPE Survivorship Program

The HOPE Survivorship Program provides excellent multidisciplinary care not only to cancer survivors, but also to patients who have undergone bone marrow transplantation. The HOPE Program, which stands for Helping Oncology Patients Excel, helps childhood cancer and bone marrow transplantation survivors of all ages live fuller, healthier lives by helping them to cope with side effects of cancer, cancer treatment and bone marrow transplantation.

MIBG Program

The MIBG Program in the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders is dedicated to the safe administration of MIBG. MIBG stands for metaiodobenzylguanidine, which is a treatment for certain types of cancerous tumor cells including neuroblastoma, pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma. This type of MIBG therapy uses intravenous (IV) radiation targeted to certain cancer cells.

Neuro-Oncology Program

Experts in our Neuro-Oncology Program deliver optimal treatment and kid-friendly care for children with brain tumors, with the goal of preserving and improving their quality of life. Our innovative program offers access to clinical trials, outpatient chemotherapy for infusions requiring intravenous (IV) fluids, and outpatient bone marrow transplants for certain brain tumors. This means more time at home and less time in the hospital for your child.

Pediatric Oncology Program

The Pediatric Oncology Program is one of the nation’s best oncology centers for children. With decades of pediatric expertise and experience in comprehensive cancer treatment, we’re equipped to support your family every step of the way. Our Pediatric Oncology Program is the largest in the region and one of the largest programs in the country.

Polyposis Program

Our experienced Polyposis Program team diagnoses and treats inherited pediatric polyposis syndromes. Much like hereditary cancer, polyposis syndromes are inherited diseases involving the development or presence of small tissue growths called polyps.

Surgical Oncology Program

The Surgical Oncology Program is made up of specialists from pediatrics, surgery and oncology and is ranked among the nation’s best pediatric surgical cancer treatment centers. The surgical oncology team is committed to improving the lives of children with cancer by providing expert surgical treatment for all types of pediatric cancers.

Therapeutic Apheresis

The pediatric care team in our Therapeutic Apheresis Program performs apheresis procedures for children to treat a variety of conditions. These conditions include cancer, iron overload due to chronic transfusions, kidney disease, transplant rejection, autoimmune diseases and blood disorders. During apheresis, a child’s total blood volume is safely removed from their body and sent through sterile tubing to an apheresis machine, where it is separated into various parts, such as red blood cells, white blood cells and plasma.

The Spots and Dots Clinic

The Spots and Dots Clinic, also known as the "Young Women's Bleeding Clinic," addresses the congenital and acquired bleeding disorders that often go unrecognized by young women and their clinicians. The Clinic provides complete, one-stop care to diagnose and treat gynecological and hematologic issues in young women with heavy menstrual bleeding with or without an underlying blood disorder.

Wellness Program

The Wellness Program in the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders is comprised of a multidisciplinary team of professionals who identify and address all the psychosocial needs of our patients and families. The Wellness Program team helps families navigate the challenging and stressful experience of having a child diagnosed with pediatric cancer or a blood disorder.
